What exactly does the Second Amendment really mean?  One need only ask the founding fathers.  We can't do that today unfortunately, but we do have their letters and their statements concerning this right.

"Americans need not fear the federal government because they enjoy the advantage of being armed, which you possess over the people of almost every other nation." James Madison.

Another favorite quote is the following:

"Giving money and power to Government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys." -- P.J. O'Rourke

Ever watch CSPAN?  You would think our elected leaders were in the 1st grade fighting over the last chocholate chip cookie.

 I do not believe that there is any way for anyone to pick and choose which ones are ok, and which ones are not.  As Justice Antonin Scalia once said "A Bill of Rights that means what the majority wants it to mean is worthless."  As such, I unequivocally believe that the Second Admendment protects our ability to own any firearm, no matter how short, how long, how many bullets it will hold, how fast it will shoot and bow large of a caliber it is.  Here is another quote I found:  (Author unknown to me)

• Commit genocide - wrong, ask the American Indians
• Put people in internment camps - wrong, ask Japanese Americans
• Kill citizens for their religious beliefs - wrong, ask the Mormons or the Davidians
• Declare martial law - wrong, supposedly we've been under it for decades.
• Deprive its citizens of their rights - hmm, drug laws have shredded the 4th amendment
• Turn it's military on the civilians - wrong, ask the students at Kent state, ask the Davidians
• Abuse/misuse it's subjects - wrong, ask the blacks they experimented on
• America is pretty good, but we do some very bad things. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

If the founding fathers were to see our country today, I believe they would have re-written the 2nd amendment, and they would probably guarantee our right to own even heavier weapons.
